Preparing to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time is an exciting time. It is a time to focus on God’s mercy, how to forgive and how to celebrate forgiveness. Children of the Parish, who are in second grade or older, are invited to prepare to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
First Reconciliation Ceremony
The ceremony normally takes place in February and it usually begins at 7:00 pm in the church. The children come to the church with their parents and/or guardians.
The ceremony begins with a prayer service, gospel reading, song and guidance from the priest. Then the children come forward to make their First Reconciliation. There will be visiting clergy from surrounding parishes that will assist with this celebration. The Priests sit in private areas in the church to receive the children. The priest and the child will face each other. Only the priest to whom the child is confessing will be able to hear the child. The priest will give the child their penance. The child will return to their pew, knee to pray and complete their penance. After the children have completed their penance, the participants will recite a closing prayer and the ceremony will conclude.
Requirements to start preparation
In order to register for First Reconciliation preparation, children must meet the requirements listed below.
- Children must be in second grade or older.
- Children must regularly attend Family Faith Formation (FFF) Class or St. Norbert School. FFF class must be attended the year prior to and the Reconciliation year.
- The Parish must have on file a copy of the baptismal certificate (or other acceptable proof of baptism) for the child. If a family no longer has a copy of the child’s original certificate, contact the parish of baptism to request a copy (note that most churches require a few week’s notice).
- If a child was baptized in another faith tradition, parents must contact the Parish Office before the start of the preparation.
First Reconciliation Preparation
Of vital importance to a child’s preparation is the family’s participation at Mass on a weekly basis. The Mass is a revelation and the greatest expression of the Catholic faith. It is here that the preparation for this sacrament comes alive. It is where as a community we offer as a sacrifice our successes and failures and where God accepts them with great joy guiding us to a deeper relationship with Him.
First Reconciliation preparation is discussed along with First Communion preparation in the Fall of each school year with an introductory Parent Meeting. Preparation requirements and schedules for both First Reconciliation and First Communion are distributed.
