It is with great joy that St. Norbert Parish assists parents with the baptism of their baby. Read below to learn what you need to do to get your child ready to receive God’s embrace.
Child Baptism Service
During the Baptism ceremony, the priest says, “The Christian Community welcomes you with great joy.” This is the core theme and meaning of the Baptism Ceremony. The baptism ritual is a participatory one with parents, godparents and other attendees joining in and professing their faith.
The baptismal ceremony is conducted by a priest or deacon at the church’s baptismal fountain. During the celebration, parents promise to raise their child in the Catholic faith and godparents agree to assist the family in this effort. The priest joyfully welcomes the child into the Catholic community and anoints the child with oil to signify their salvation from sin. The parents and godparents join in renouncing Satan and professing their faith. The top of the child’s head is sprinkled with water to signify rebirth of the soul. The child is anointed with sacred chrism (consecrated oil) and dressed in a white garment to symbolize purity of faith and to acknowledge the cleansing power of Baptism. A baptismal candle is lit from the church’s Easter candle symbolizing the child’s enlightenment by Christ. The candle is given to the parents and the use of the baptismal candle is encouraged at the child’s birthdays to celebrate the anniversary of being baptized into the Christian family.
Child Baptism Preparation
Your baby’s initiation into the Roman Catholic Church requires that you attend a preparation class to prepare yourself for the responsibility of raising your child as a Catholic.
If this is your first time bringing a child forward for baptism, it is a requirement of the Archdiocese of Chicago that both parents participate in one Baptism Preparation Session. It is recommended that parents complete this session six to eight of weeks prior to the child’s baptism date.
St. Norbert’s Baptism Preparation Sessions are usually held on the fourth Monday of each month in at 7:00 pm at the Parish Office (excluding holidays and holy weeks). If you have already had a child baptized at St. Norbert, you are not required to but you are welcome to attend another session. Click here for the 2015-2016 Parent Baptism Preparation Schedule.
Baptism Service Schedule
Child Baptisms are celebrated at 1:00 PM the First and Third Sunday of the month, excluding the Lent Season. No Baptisms are performed during Lent.
Families who wish to have their child baptized by a priest or deacon who is not part of the St. Norbert staff will be accommodated. Baptisms performed by a visiting priest or deacon will be scheduled based on church availability.
We encouraged the celebration of the sacraments with our community rather than privately. Thus, multiple baptisms maybe we performed on the same date.
Baptism Godparent(s) Requirement
Parents should choose a Godparent(‘s) for their child who will take an active role in the faith formation of the child.
CHOOSE SOMEONE WHO:
- Is a Catholic Christian relative or friend who will serve as a Christian role model for your child.
- Gives witness to God in their everyday lives.
- Is willing to maintain a long-term relationship with your child.
- You entrust with the raising of your child in faith.
Each child brought forward for baptism must have at least one Godparent who is a confirmed, practicing Catholic over the age of 16.
Parents may choose a non-Catholic Christian or two persons of the same sex as Godparents but they cannot be an “official” Godparent for the parish record book. They will be noted as a Christian Witness in the baptismal records.
