The children of the parish, kindergarten through grade 6 are invited to join the Liturgy of the Word for Children at 9:30 a.m. Sunday Masses, September through April.
This service helps build the foundation for our children’s life in faith. The children engage with an interactive liturgy that introduces essential faith concepts and God’s mighty love. Stories, music, activities and crafts are used to present faith concepts. Any child (kindergarten through grade 6) may participate – no registration is necessary.
The children are invited to gather with leaders after the Opening Prayer at mass. They are lead to the Church basement for the program. After a brief welcome and prayer, they listen to the First Reading proclaimed from the Children’s Lectionary. They sing a Psalm and the Gospel Acclamation. One of the adult leaders proclaims the Gospel. The children separate into three groups, K-grade 2, grades 3-4 and grades 5-6. In each group, the leader through stories, discussions, or pictures, shares an age-appropriate reflection on the Word – whatever the leader finds most appropriate to conveying the meaning of the scriptures. The children are invited to share their own thoughts and ideas. They recite the Creed and pray their Prayers of Intercession after which the children return to their families in church for the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
How can you help?
Adult Leaders are needed to effectively run the program. Adults lead the scripture service, reflection and prayers for all age groups. Resources for preparation and reflection are provided. Previous teaching experience is not required. This is a ministry of faith-sharing rather than teaching.
