Preparing for the first time to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation (also known as penance) is an exciting occasion. It is a time for focus on; God’s mercy, how we forgive among our family, friends, community, and how we celebrate forgiveness. Children of the parish who are in first grade are invited to begin the formal preparation to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Children must be enrolled in RE classes the year prior to (1st grade) and the year (2nd grade) of the intended First Reconciliation date.
The focus of the catechesis for the preparation of First Reconciliation is the on healing and the resolution offered to us by God’s abundant love and forgiveness. Also introduced is the topic of making choices. Children celebrate their First Sacrament of Reconciliation at a special service in February, prior to their First Communion.
Like First Communion, St. Norbert Parish’s preparation for First Reconciliation requests parents to help cultivate their child’s faith. An annual parent meeting (for First Communion and First Reconciliation) explains roles, provides discussion points and activities to be worked on with your child to help them prepare for this holy sacrament.
Of vital importance to a child’s preparation is the family’s participation at Mass on a weekly basis. The Mass is a revelation and the greatest expression of the Catholic faith.
