The St. Norbert Junior Youth Ministry (SNJYM) for 7th and 8th graders offers projects that are fun, spiritual, and build a sense of community. Projects offered throughout the year include “Feed My Starving Children” in October and February, making fleece blankets for the elderly in December, Christmas caroling at Crestwood Place, and preparing and serving dinner for Hilda’s Place Soup Kitchen in January. Read below to learn more about these popular events.
Please come join our events for an experience that is truly different! Bring a friend as well! High Schoolers are welcome to join the SNJYM to help lead the activities and to add to the fun.
We are also looking for Parents to help with organizing and chaperoning the events.
Two Sundays a month (second and fourth), the 5:30 Mass at St. Norbert is transformed into a Teen Mass. At these masses, teens perform all the Ministries for the mass. They will greet people at the door, help people find their seat, lead the music, cantor, read the Word, share Prayers of the Faithful and serve as Eucharistic Ministers.
Every teen in the Parish is invited to celebrate these masses. Whether as an usher, lector, musician, greeter or as one sharing mass in a pew, please come Pack the Pews!
If you are a teen who comes to mass regularly, invite your friends; and if you are a teen who doesn’t normally come to mass, take a chance and come to a worship service designed especially for you.
SNJYM meets to make fleece blankets to be presented as Christmas presents to nursing home residents. Many single-layer tie blankets with many different patterns are made. Donations of yard-and-a-half fleece material are welcome. Hot chocolate and dessert will be served to put us all in a wintry mood!
This is a wonderful opportunity to share your time and talent with the elderly residents at Crestwood Place on Waukegan in Northbrook. We will meet in St. Norbert’s Church on a Saturday in December at 2:00 for a little singing practice; and then we will go to Crestwood Place at 3:00 to sing holiday songs and to share snacks with the residents. What a great way to celebrate the holiday season by giving of yourself. We welcome you to bring a friend and/or your family along to add to the festivities. All are welcome to contribute snacks as well.
Hilda’s Place is a northern suburbs year-round, permanent facility that serves 15 to 20 homeless men ages 18 and over. Our High School Youth Ministry prepares and serves dinner at Hilda’s Place the third Tuesday of every month. The third Tuesday in January happens to be during high school finals, so we invite the Junior Youth Ministry to prepare and serve dinner at the shelter in January. Youth Ministry participants are asked to bring something to share for dinner (salad, rolls, dessert, or drinks) and help serve the meal. If you are unable to serve, food donations are still welcome. The group normally leaves from St. Norbert Church steps at 5:00 p.m. and return at 8:30 p.m. This event is a great way to provide a very important service for those less fortunate than St. Norbert Parishioners and it is fun too!
Feed My Starving Children is a non-profit organization that creates and packages nutritious meals (vitamins, vegetables, soy and rice) to be sent to starving children in the USA and all over the world. The St. Norbert Youth Ministry has the privilege of working with this group several times a year. This normally requires an evening commitment. The Youth Ministry volunteers meet at the St. Norbert Church steps; drive to 1072 National Parkway in Schaumburg or to 742 East Park Avenue in Libertyville; prepare meals for an hour-and-a-half; and then return back to St. Norbert. The visit begins with a quick video describing the organization, and then you are shown how to pack the meals and the race is on! The next hour-and-a-half is spent packing meals and competing against other tables to see who can pack the most meals! This is a wonderful experience and so much is accomplished in just a few hours.
Whale of a Sale takes place during a May weekend. It is a great fundraiser for the whole St. Norbert Parish. It is also an excellent way for the Youth Ministry to raise some funds! The Whale of a Sale is a “giant” garage sale. Parishioners and others drop off donations and the church sells these items. The Youth Ministry runs a concession stand during the sale. On Friday night from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., hot dogs, brats, hamburgers, chips, and soda are sold to shoppers. On Saturday morning, doughnuts and coffee sales begin at 7:00 in the morning. At 10:00 a.m. hot dogs, brats, hamburgers, chips, and soda are once again sold for the remainder of the day.
